Chemical fume hoods, when used properly, are one of the most reliable engineering controls in the laboratory. They protect workers by:
The constant air volume (CAV) fume hood exhausts the same amount of air all the time, regardless of sash position. As the sash is lowered and raised, the velocity at the face of the hood changes.
Some newer models, called variable air volume (VAV) hoods, modulate air flow based on sash height and maintain 100 feet per minute face velocity at all sash heights.
VAV fume hoods are equipped with a monitor (see image at right) that indicates whether the hood is in "standard operation" or "standby operation" mode. The fume hood monitor also has an "emergency purge" button, which increases airflow through the hood to maximum and can be used to quickly remove air contaminates from the lab.

A fume hood is a ventilated enclosure used to control exposure to hazardous or odorous chemicals. An exhaust fan draws air into the front opening of the hood, then up and out of the hood through the ductwork. Because the air that is pulled into the hood is not filtered, fume hoods only offer protection to its users and no protection to the products inside the hood.
Hood performance and efficiency depends on an adequate and uniform velocity of air moving through the sash opening. Hood performance is adversely affected by many factors including mechanical malfunction, drafts or open doors and windows, and poor operating procedures of the person using the hood.
